A UNIQUE MOVEMENT PRACTICE

THE NIA TECHNIQUE

WHAT IS THE NIA TECHNIQUE?

The Nia technique combines Fitness and Wellness into a unique movement practice. In Nia we blend the fun and spontaneity of the dance arts, the fluid, organic movement patterns of the gentler martial arts like Tai Chi and Aikido, as well as the precision and power of Tae Kwon Do.  We integrate the expansiveness of Yoga, and the mindfulness of functional movement therapies such as Feldenkrais and Alexander Technique. Systematic principles, and each person’s connection to sensation, guide the technique of Nia.

A Nia class delivers a whole body workout that pays attention to the joints, the muscles, and the bones. It has 52 moves, but you get to choose the level that restores and energizes your body. This is why Nia is for everybody: you adapt the move to suit your Body’s Way, in a completely relaxed and supportive environment, with music that stimulates and soothes both body and mind. Nia invites you into a world of joyous movement, in which you cultivate awareness of sensation, and of the way the body is designed to move.

BENEFITS OF THE NIA TECHNIQUE

The Nia practice deepens your connection to your body and increases the pleasure of living in your body. It helps you to connect to and accept your body as it is, and then the changes start to happen! You may lose weight, your co-ordination will improve, your fitness levels, flexibility and mobility increase.

It’s a whole body workout. Every Nia move, whether of the base, core, hands and arms, is designed with a specific purpose in mind.

Nia improves muscular strength and cardiovascular fitness, taking you from where you are at to a higher level.

Nia works with the body-mind connection through connecting to sensation. We cultivate stability, flexibility, agility, strength and mobility. Slowly you will begin to sense  what stability and mobility feel like, what agility feels like, what power in your core and your legs feels like.

Everything about the way we move in Nia is aligned to the design of the body, and you will sense that. Because of this, you will feel energy flowing throughout the body.

You will leave a Nia class feeling uplifted, having calmed your nervous system and relieved stress.

Nia allows for emotional expression and release, using music and sound to energise, heal and relax.

In Nia, through awareness, you will learn how to change your movement for more comfort and pleasure.

A Nia class is a supportive, welcoming space, open to all, that allows you to move in your body’s way, learning and dancing in your own natural time. And it’s fun!
